How to choose a hosting jurisdiction
A practical framework for picking a country for your server: threat model, audience location and budget.
1. Start from your threat model
Who might want your server offline, or want your data? A copyright troll, a foreign government and a local regulator are different problems, and different countries protect against each.
2. Then look at your audience
Latency matters. Serving Latin America from Moldova works, but Panama will feel faster. For Europe-wide apps, the Netherlands and Romania usually win on speed.
3. Accept that no country is lawless
Every jurisdiction has courts and laws. Choosing one is about whose law applies and how carefully it is applied, not about escaping law altogether. Clearly illegal content gets removed everywhere we operate.
4. Spread risk across countries
For important projects, put a primary in one country and a mirror in another, with DNS you control. One order or outage then can't take everything down.
Put it into practice
A VPS S plan is enough for most guides.
